Welcome to the Falmouth School Modern Foreign Languages Department, where our focus is not just on language acquisition but on inspiring a genuine joy in communicating in another language and fostering an appreciation of diverse cultures. Our curriculum is carefully crafted around the four essential skills of communication, ensuring that all students can engage confidently in day-to-day situations in a different language.
Our primary aim is to cultivate a love for languages among our students. The curriculum is centered on key language skills — reading, listening, speaking, and writing — seamlessly integrated into diverse topics. Starting with fundamental themes such as self-expression, hobbies, school, and food, we gradually progress to more complex subjects like social media, travel, and culture. This approach ensures that students become proficient linguists across a wide spectrum of areas in their lives.
Learning a language at Falmouth transcends the rote memorization of grammatical rules; we prioritize learners' ability to use the target language effectively within specific contexts. Sentence builders are employed to empower all students, providing a scaffold for success and modeling sentence structures that enhance communicative competence.
Students have the exciting opportunity to choose between French and Spanish before starting in Year 7, and they can continue to study their chosen language up to Key Stage 5. At GCSE, we follow the AQA specification, and at A-level, we follow the Edexcel curriculum.
Join us at the Falmouth School Modern Foreign Languages Department, where we believe that language learning is a gateway to global understanding. Together, we embark on a journey that not only equips students with linguistic proficiency but also broadens their cultural horizons, preparing them to thrive in an interconnected world.
